JK Rowling tweeted: “Alison Bailey is a hero to me and countless other feminists because she refused to give up her beliefs and principles in the face of bullying and discrimination. Congratulations.” Ms Bailey, who is lesbian, helped set up the LGB Alliance in 2019 as an opponent of Stonewall. Kate Barker, chief executive of the group, said: “Allison’s bravery and unwavering focus on truth and justice has profound implications for women and LGB people who will not succumb to the destructive poison of extreme gender ideology. We are forever grateful.” Alongside her action against Garden Court, Ms Bailey also sued Stonewall, claiming the charity had induced the chambers to discriminate against her. However, this was rejected by the court. The panel also rejected separate claims by Ms Bailey of indirect discrimination by the Garden Court and that the chambers had allowed Stonewall to run its complaints process. The court did not accept that she lost work and income because of her initial protest. In December 2018, Stephen Lue, a family law barrister, sent an email to colleagues informing them that Garden Court Chambers was becoming a Stonewall Diversity Champion, a program under which companies pay the charity for ongoing advice on inclusion at work. In response, Ms Bailey emailed: “There are many of us in the LGBT community who fully support trans rights, but we do not support the trans extremism currently supported by Stonewall and others. I categorically oppose any official association with Stonewall.” He then accused the charity of operating like a “criminal protection racket” by inducing companies and foundations to adopt its policies. She had to raise more than £500,000 to fight her case. A Stonewall spokesman said: “We are pleased that the employment tribunal found in a judgment that Stonewall was NOT found to have instructed, caused or induced the Garden Court departments to discriminate against Allison Bailey.” A Garden Court Chambers spokesman said: “We are considering today’s decision, which dismissed Ms Bailey’s claim against Stonewall and most of her claims against Garden Court Chambers, including all of her indirect discrimination claims. “We have argued throughout that our members rightfully have different views on the complex debate surrounding transgender and gender-based rights. Our primary goal has always been to uphold our values and maintain a workplace that is inclusive and welcoming to all. “We are carefully reviewing the decision with our legal team with a view to appealing.”
