Suffolk Fire and Rescue station manager Alex Smith said: “Initially two appliances were called in. On arrival they realized the fire could spread so they set up four pumps and called for a water carrier. “Crews worked hard to prevent the spread to the permanent crop and, working with the owner and the farmer, prevented the spread. Unfortunately, there was a small spread to a 1,400 ton sludge pile. The incident is now under control.” The stop message was sent at 6.29pm. It is the latest fire to break out in Suffolk in recent weeks, with the fire service declaring a major incident last Tuesday after being called out almost 50 times. On Sunday, Suffolk firefighters were called to a fire in fields in Burgate and Knodishall.
