Germany will play England in the Euro 2022 final after beating France 2-1 last night. Two goals from Alexandra Pope, who is now level with England’s Beth Meade for the golden boot, saw the eight-time European champions seal their place at Wembley. Pop had given her side the lead in the first half before Candida Diani’s quick-fire equalizer drew France level before half-time. France had chances to go ahead after the break but were unable to take them and were punished by a ruthless Pop, who headed home the winner in the 76th minute. Popp, who had scored in each game before, broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when she volleyed home Svenja Huth’s cross. It was the first time France had gone behind in the tournament, but they were behind for just four minutes. Diani drove forward and let fly off the edge of the box. Her shot hit the crossbar and deflected off Germany goalkeeper Merle Fromms and into the net. France almost took the lead just after the hour mark with two quick-fire chances. Clara Matteo found space for a shot inside the box but Kathryn Hendrich blocked superbly before Wendy Renard headed over the bar from the resulting corner. France were made to pay for these missed opportunities as the Huth-Popp combination struck again. Huth headed a cross into the penalty spot and Pop rose high into his own net.
