Posted 2 hours ago By Chris Shaw in Austria Jurgen Klopp has outlined the lessons Liverpool can take from their pre-season defeat to Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. The Reds were beaten 1-0 by the Austrian champions as Benjamin Sesko’s first-half strike separated the two sides, despite Klopp’s men creating plenty of chances, particularly during the closing stages. After the match, the manager assessed his team’s efforts on the night at Red Bull Arena and detailed the improvements needed defensively and offensively. Read his chat with Liverpoolfc.com below… Extended highlights: Salzburg 1-0 Liverpool In a difficult test at night… In the first half we made too many mistakes, which they could use. We had some good moments too, we could have scored obviously in the whole game at least four or five goals. I didn’t because we were in the first half – if you want to talk about football – we were too open, we were too wide, we weren’t connected enough in moments when you lose the ball. Then everything is open, it’s like a freeway, and with their speed that’s how they had their chances, especially when you miss simple passes where nobody can really react. They scored their goal and the last half hour was like a storm, we were really like a truck. But we haven’t finished the situations. Obviously we’ll have to put that in our game as well and then it’ll be fine. We played the game outside of full practice. We had to make a lot of changes – okay, I get it. But what I can say: it’s really at least average to lose a game. That’s why we all cheered in the last situation with the possible penalty. In the Premier League I definitely go to the stand for what I thought and said! But that was it now for the rest of the season complaining about it. But at that moment it was such a clear penalty. it would be nice to get a result for the effort. In the team that does everything but score and doesn’t play like a friendly… No, it was definitely not friendly for Salzburg. Not so much for us. Salzburg has had these kinds of tough challenges, but they are doing very well. with all due respect to Salzburg, they are doing very well. Sometimes I didn’t really like the challenges, but it’s ok, nothing happened there I think. As I said, in the first half a lot of mistakes. We set the boys up and everything is fine, they can do much better and they had good times too. But especially in the first half, the majority of the players have to get used to what we do. Darwin was very often alone. Everyone went down, everyone was involved in the rally but too wide out and we could only pass the ball to Darwin in the box. He had his moments and almost scored, but he needs a lot more support around him. You keep other players busy who can’t focus on him. So many things. Second half, imagine now Darwin would be there in the box, and that would help too. It’s like – I don’t feel great, but we take it and go from here. ‌ With the opportunity for young players to learn from experience… Yes, it wasn’t just the young players, we made it. All boys can do so much better, can’t they. We played in the first half with a team that can play in the Champions League, probably should qualify but can play. And it is a difficult task for the composition we have chosen. As I said, they are doing extremely well and we played right into their hands. When you’re playing football but you’re not connected, you lose the ball, it means there’s always space to use on the counter attack. And that’s what we gave them. And that’s what we need to learn. We know that but in the first half maybe we didn’t know it well enough and that’s why we conceded the goal.
