This morning, Backbone (the company behind the Backbone One, a pretty cool controller accessory for the iPhone) debuted a new variant of its device: the Backbone One PlayStation Edition. The idea behind Backbone, for those unfamiliar: pick up Backbone, slide your iPhone (or, soon, Android device) into its extendable grip, and bam — proper on-the-go games, buttons and all. Check out Matthew Panzarino’s review of Backbone One here. Internally, this PlayStation version is largely the same as the original Backbone One — it has the same switches, triggers, layout, etc. On the outside, however, it’s been redesigned (in collaboration with the PlayStation design team) to look right next to a PS5 or official DualSense controller. Here’s what else you need to know:
The company will sell both devices. the original Backbone One will not go away This version of the controller is identified as a PlayStation controller in the OS, allowing compatible mobile games to use the correct PlayStation glyphs (Triangle, Circle, etc.) instead of ABXY in menus/guides/etc. As with the original Backbone One, it will cost $100. It will start shipping today
While it would be easy to write it off as “Oh, it’s the Backbone One but white,” it’s a pretty big stamp of approval for a relatively new startup like Backbone to release a PlayStation version of anything, all the way down. on the PS logo hidden on the drop-down back.
