Thursday: Severe storms return to eastern Ontario and southern Quebec

Severe weather returns to eastern Ontario and southern Quebec on Thursday after a weekend of severe weather. Surveyors have confirmed an EF-1 tornado near Madoc, Ont. last Sunday. The storm caused extensive damage to trees and houses in the area. Thursday’s forecast includes scattered thunderstorms across Ontario, with a chance of severe thunderstorms in southern Quebec. Parts of southern and eastern Ontario, stretching from Windsor to Ottawa, will see daily highs near 30 degrees, with humidity pushing the same into the mid-30s for most. Southern Quebec will experience the same temperatures. As the heat and humidity increase, the same temperatures will be in the 30s for some areas. A cold front pushing into the area will pack in the moist, unstable air and produce a round of storms during the afternoon hours. There will be widespread polycells with a chance for rotating storms or supercells. “Rotating storms can sometimes lead to a tornado, but that’s a low chance as conditions aren’t favorable today,” says Weather Network meteorologist Matthew Grinder. Although the chance of a tornado will be low, residents should be cautious and monitor weather warnings. The highest potential for rotating storms will be in southern Quebec. Stronger storms on Thursday could bring strong winds, large hail and heavy rainfall. By Friday the storms are moving further east through eastern Quebec and into the Maritime provinces.

Looking Ahead: Beautiful weekend ahead

Looking forward to a great weekend in southern Ontario and Quebec. Plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures and low humidity will make the weekend a treat for those looking to get outside or open the windows at night. On Friday, southern Ontario will see temperatures in the low 20s. The trend for warmer temperatures will continue through the weekend and into early next week. Enjoy it while it lasts, though, because forecasters are watching for warmer weather in the first week of August, with the possibility of heatwaves.
