For months, migrants have been bussed into Washington, D.C., from Texas and Arizona, but aid groups say there aren’t enough resources available. Bowser said 4,000 migrants have arrived so far in a “humanitarian crisis” that has reached a “tipping point”. Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott began chartering buses to send immigrants to D.C. and other so-called “sanctuary cities” earlier this year. Bowser requested the National Guard’s assistance in a letter to the office of Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin dated July 19 and a second letter to White House aides dated July 22. “The immigration crisis facing our city and country through hardball political games by the Governors of Texas and Arizona must be addressed at the federal level,” the July 22 letter said. DC has not received a response as of Thursday, according to News4. Bowser also requested that the DC Armory, a multi-purpose event space in southeast DC, be used as a processing center. DC says it has dispersed more than $1 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency grants to non-governmental organizations. On Wednesday, immigration agents found 73 immigrants living in homes operated by smugglers in Northwest DC, according to internal documents reviewed by NBC News. It’s unclear why so many immigrants were being held in what appear to be shelters in DC Stay with News4 for more on this developing story.
