The Blues entered the summer with big spending ambitions, but have not achieved everything they hoped for so far. Kalidou Koulibaly has filled part of the defensive hole left by Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. However, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel knows he needs more. And the failure to sign two of their targets this week has seriously compounded the club’s frustration. Jules Conte looked to be closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge but stalled and has now signed for Barcelona. Meanwhile, Nordi Mukiele has gone to Paris Saint-Germain instead of Chelsea. As a result, Mukiele’s fellow Frenchman Fofana has re-emerged as the Blues’ main target. According to journalist Ignazio Genuardi, however, Chelsea have failed with an initial bid for the 21-year-old. The report does not state the size of the fee. Nevertheless, there is potential light at the end of the tunnel for Chelsea’s new owner – sporting director Todd Bohli. Fofana has reportedly agreed personal terms with the west London club, with much of the transfer process now sealed. The other important part is to agree a fee with Leicester, who have conflicting desires that affect decision-making.
Leicester can influence Chelsea, chase Fofana
On the one hand, the Foxes are the only team in Europe’s top seven leagues yet to make a summer signing. They are struggling financially and could do with a big sale. Fofana, however, is a player Leicester boss Rodgers wants to keep. His age and untapped potential for club and country make him a critical asset. Leicester suffered from injuries last season. And there is a belief that when all these players laugh again – with Fofana at the center of it all – that the situation will not be as bad as it seems. As such, reports claim that Leicester will consider selling Fofana for just £70m.
Chelsea wary of the known transfer misery
Chelsea, meanwhile, have been here before with transfer targets this summer and will be keen to avoid another deal. It sounds like Fofana could eventually be pipped away from Leicester. They are struggling to invest in themselves and Tuchel’s desperation for a signing may see his club pay the £70m. But Chelsea have seen Kunde and Mukiele slip through their fingers and agreeing personal terms with Fofana can be likened to the five-year deal for Kunde. The 21-year-old is one Chelsea must not let go if they are serious about strengthening their defence.
