CWG 2022 Opening Ceremony Highlights: The 2022 Commonwealth Games were officially declared open after a grand opening ceremony held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Thursday. Olympian PV Sindhu and men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh lead the Indian contingent. Neeraj Chopra was India’s designated flag bearer at the opening ceremony but was injured during the World Athletics Championships where he won the silver medal. He had to withdraw from CWG 2022 due to injury. Earlier, drummer-percussionist Abraham Paddy Tetteh kicked things off at the Alexander Stadium and then Indian classical singer and composer Ranjana Ghatak took the lead, the segment meant to showcase the city’s diversity. The Games, set to be the UK’s biggest and most expensive sporting event since the London 2012 Olympics, have had to deal with the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The opening ceremony is attended by Prince Charles as chief guest. The Queen’s Baton arrived at the Games Village in Birmingham on Wednesday 27 July. The entire opening ceremony, which is expected to last around two and a half hours, was created by British screenwriter Steven Knight, who produced the famous crime drama ‘Peaky Blinders’. Speaking of the CWG, athletes from more than 72 nations and regions have participated in the multi-sport event. Meanwhile, India had won 66 medals in the previous edition of the Commonwealth Games held in Australia’s Gold Coast.
