MONTREAL — AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) will host a live and virtual press conference in the AHF booth #1024 in the 2022 International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022) on Friday July 29 at 11:00 am EDT in Montreal, Canada at Conference Center Montrisin the convention center and virtually through Zoom. Preparations for AIDS 2022 have been mired in controversy because many prominent public health experts and advocates did not receive Canadian visas or their application process took too long to arrive in Canada in time for the conference. During the press conference, public health experts will discuss how global health equity is undermined through visa restrictions that preclude a free and valuable exchange of ideas, and more generally through rich countries’ hoarding of vaccines and their reluctance to share vital important biomedical expertise with developing countries. In the world of emerging epidemics and pandemics, an effective response is not possible without equity, accountability and transparency. These advocates are fighting for our most vulnerable populations and the voiceless. The stark contrast in how people are treated in the Global North compared to the Global South is unacceptable and a major detriment to the world’s ability to end the ‘other’ HIV/AIDS pandemic.”

Other topics of discussion will include the inadequate global response to the global monkeypox outbreak, which was recently, albeit sadly belatedly, declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization. Advocates will also highlight the fact that HIV/AIDS remains a major global public health crisis – responsible for 650,000 deaths each year worldwide – and requires a serious commitment from rich countries to ensure a successful, rapid approach Seven Replenishment of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
According to UNAIDS, there were over 38 million people living with HIV in 2021, including 1.5 million people who newly acquired the virus. Since the AIDS epidemic/pandemic began, more than 40 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
