The fire broke out shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday at the popular Philadelphia cheese shop in the 400 block of South Street. Helicopter 6 above the scene showed smoke rising from the rear of the building. The Philadelphia Fire Department said “companies began investigating smoke in the building around 9:25 a.m.” “This incident at 4th & South is now two alarms, meaning approximately 100 PFD members are responding — firefighters, medics, chiefs and support personnel,” the fire department said on Twitter. The department explained that some additional companies arriving will allow firefighters with the original responding units to rest and recuperate due to the heat and length of the incident. Firefighters were seen on the second floor of the building breaking windows as they tried to bring the blaze under control. There are no reports of injuries. South Street east is closed to traffic between 3rd and 5th streets. Jim’s Steaks South St. just celebrated its 46th anniversary earlier this month, having first opened its doors in 1976. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. This is breaking news. Stay tuned to 6abc.com as more details become available. Copyright © 2022 WPVI-TV. All rights reserved.
